Texx in the City: Time Eraser
For diehards, the second single off Southern Wild’s upcoming debut album will be instantly recognisable from their Popsicle Studio Session in late 2015.
Recorded by Raiven Hansmann at Popsicle Studios and mastered by Tutti Espi of Songololo Music, the band cleverly decided to use this now fan-favourite as their latest offering, premiering it this morning on Nick Hamman’s 5FM show.
The track’s aesthetic is sexy and sultry and as vocalist Dave Van Vuuren professes his enduring love for his “Cherokee”, the intensity in his phrasing supplies us with a surplus of emotion. The clarity and simplicity of the core melody allows his vocals to be the focal point, providing a solid foundation for different tones to be explored.
It’s quite something to think about the trajectory of Van Vuuren’s career. I bumped into him last week and while flipping through old photos on his phone he found a promo pic of himself circa his Idols win and laughing said, “Yoh, who’s that dude?” Indeed, Van Vuuren has come a long way musically, and by surrounding himself with creatively likeminded musos in Dylan Hunt (drums), Julian van Rensburg (guitar) and Alex Smillie (bass), they’ve given the limp genre of South African rock a much-needed injection.
